A new study of over-the-counter drugs for heartburn and acid reflux has found that heartburn medications can be a cost-effective option for people with heartburn, even if they have no symptoms, said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that people who took a generic version of a popular heartburn medication, Nexium (esomeprazole), had a significantly lower risk of heartburn than people who had the same brand-name drug, Prilosec (omeprazole).
The researchers, led by Dr. Wolfe, of Stanford University, found that people with the same condition who had an over-the-counter version of Prilosec were more likely to develop heartburn, compared to those who had a brand-name version of the drug.
People who had an over-the-counter version of Prilosec were less likely to have heartburn than people who had a brand-name drug. It was found that patients who were taking Prilosec, such as Nexium and Prilosec Prolong, had a significantly lower risk of heartburn than those who were taking a generic version of the drug. This suggests that Prilosec's long-term effects on heartburn and acid reflux may be similar.
A heartburn medication such as Prilosec may be a safe and effective treatment option for people with heartburn, Wolfe said.
Patients with heartburn may find that a heartburn medication can provide them with an effective treatment, he said. But because they may be at risk of heartburn, they may need to take certain lifestyle measures.
In addition to the cost of medications, Prilosec can cause stomach bleeding, which can affect people who take it, Wolfe said.
“A person might have an increased risk of heartburn, which means they might have to take certain lifestyle changes, such as eating a high-fat diet, taking certain medications, or taking antacids and other supplements,” he said. “The combination of these could cause a life-threatening situation."
